Just 40 minutes from home we turn onto the mountain road that will take us up to the Balea Lac Cable Car. ‘The TransFagaras Highway’, made famous as the ultimate driving road ‘in the World’ by the T.V programme ‘Top Gear’, affords us spectacular views as we climb through the frosty forests and rocky outcrops.
During the winter months the Cable Car is the only way to reach the Ice Hotel, which is located at over 2000m above sea level.
Once on the cable car look out for ‘The Balea Cascade’, the beautiful frozen waterfall that runs the length of the pine clad valley below. We reach the summit and as one 10 year old guest said ‘Stepping out of the cable car is like stepping out of the wardrobe into Narnia’. Spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the complex, snapping pictures of the surrounding Carpathian Mountains, enjoying some of the activities on offer and of course, visiting the amazing Ice Church… well, this is Transylvania after all!
Your guide will also take you on ‘The Tunnel Trek’, conditions permitting. The tunnel is actually the mountain road through from Transylvania into Wallacia during the summer months. On the other side we are met with breathtaking views of a snow filled forested valley, protected by sheer mountain slopes, that no one has set foot in since the snows arrived in October. Experiencing the remoteness, it’s easy to understand why the only castle that Vlad Tepes (aka Dracula) ever commissioned is further down this valley.
At dusk the atmosphere is truly unique. The last cable car of the evening descends as the winter sun sets the ice and snow aflame with colour.
Dinner can be taken actually in the Ice Hotel or in the nearby Balea Lac Cabana Restaurant. A variety of drinks, cocktails and hot mulled wine are also available from the ‘Bar Sub-Zero’. The perfect place to have a nightcap to round off a truly AMAZING day.
Then, with little light pollution, the show of stars is spectacular as night draws in. Guests will be shown to their individually designed and hand crafted room and will be given comfy, specialised sleeping bags. Many of our guests comment on how surprisingly warm and comfortable their night has been.
Coffee and Continental Breakfast is served in the Balea Lac Chalet Restaurant. Then a final chance to enjoy the snow and ice before taking the cable car down to your waiting transport.
Important note: In high winds or extreme weather conditions the cable car may not be able to run. Although this is extremely rare Secret Transylvania can take no responsibility for this act of nature and can offer no refunds. We will however endeavour to take guests on day 3 instead.
